European History World War I Essay Example for Free

European History instauration struggle I analyzeThe focal point of this essay is to evaluate and analyze the state of affairs of egg-producing(prenominal) nurses in World War I. The paper over totally could be enumerated about the squeeze of World War I on the home front to the countries involving especially women. For the purpose references would be taken from preponderantly four books. The first one is Its a long way to Tipperary British and Irish Nurses in the Great War by Yvonne McEwen and the second one used in this paper is Nurses at the Front Writing the Wounds of the Great War by Marg bet R. Higonnet.The third and fourth book used for this paper would be The woman of Royaumount A frugal womens hospital on the western front by Eileen Crofton and War and Gender How Gender Shapes the War System and Vice Versa by Joshua S. Goldstein. Apart from all these an denomination by Marg bet H. Darrow would in like manner be used that was published in the American Historical R eview Vol. 101, No 1 in February 1996 titled French proffer Nursing and the Myth of War Experience in WWI.All these texts would be valuable resources for determining the true dress of women during the head start World War. Yvonne McEwen book deals with the characters that are often overlooked while dealing with the greater perspective of a vast incident like the basic World War. These are the deal who a great deal work behind the scene but make tremendous contribution to the cause but more often than not are not mentioned by academicians. Such characters are the fe potent nurses of the First World War.The designer presents a testimony to all those nurses of the First World War who proved to be people with astonishing courage and ability to bear hardship. It is not only the soldiers of the First World War who manoeuvered all these qualities but the author mentions that it is the young-bearing(prenominal) nurses who went unsung after proving themselves to be no less dedicated to their country and serve well than the soldiers. The sacrifices of these people are hardly written down and thusly the author is instrumental in presenting to us the untold stories of the female nurses and their specify in the First World War.At the same time the author mentions the other side of this occupation and service where the female nurses is mobilized in a large modus operandi to compete among rival nursing service agencies. The net result often proved to be uncalled for. This is because though there was a huge demand of female nurses in the First World War it was desirable that the female nurses participating and volunteering to serve are develop adequately. It is al most(prenominal) a certainty that due to this mobilization in mass numbers the quality of the female nurses was diminishing.In the same context it should also be said that this lack of practicable knowledge was often covered up by the will to serve and work extremely hard. However, the author indicate s several accounts that show the humane aspects of the First World War female nurses and their position in the social order as they were viewed by the soldiers as saviors though in most cases they were only comforters at the most. But in a time of mass destruction and agony this was more than sufficient for a dying young soldier.The author narrates this aspect of the female nurses with great affection and indulgence. (McEwen, 2006) The second text by Higonnet reveals more of personal account of the two most famous nurses from the United States, business liney shame Borden and Ellen N. La Motte. Their personal views of the First World War, as brought for for struggled by the author between the same covers, shows the inner world of the female nurses during the period of the state of warfare. These are women who saw the war extremely closely and thus narrates the extremely difficult practice of military medicine under ruthless conditions.Their accounts are often unyielding and both reflects the dilemma of treatment where the patient for whom the nurses work so hard would ultimately return to the war zone either to be killed or to kill. At this point the text becomes really touching and humane but at the same time shows us the true position of the female nurses during the First World War. It appears that the female nurses were, in a sense, just comforting medium or toll provided by the government to heal their killing machines.It is true that this cost of war is often difficult to digest with its harsh realities of death and decay of the human mind where most of the humane principals are drained off under bitter circumstances. But the nurses depict their accounts not only from the point of view of observers but from a point where it appears that they are actually cursing their need of healing the blood river. There is a certain point of motherhood or motherly feeling involved in their accounts.Their text not only becomes extremely key for determining the tr ue position of the nurses during the First World War period but also presents us with humane narratives that are inspirational, thoughtful and moving. (Higonnet, 2001) Eileen Croftons The Women of Royaumont, A Scottish Womens Hospital on the Western Front is a story of a hospital in Royaumont which was within few miles from the western front during the First World War. This story also tells the account of Miss Frances Ivens who works as a surgeon in this hospital.Miss Ivens was also responsible for the set up of this fully equipped hospital to serve the wounded soldiers from the front. This is a wonderful story about the personnel of this hospital where death and pain became a continual feature during the First World War period these were the people who never loosed any hope and lead life with hardship and service from 1915 to the end of the war in 1919. Here we find the daily life of the female nurses with their fear and hope and determination.It is a interesting notion to read th e parts where they are seen celebrating Christmas or other such festive moods along with their heavy schedule where doctors were allowed on about three hours of sleep due to rush of patients. Here we find the whereabouts of the female nurses with detail accounts such a number of patients during a specific period of time in the middle of the war and the total number of treatments along with detail of maladies along with their race and religions. The writer makes us aware that these are personnel who worked amidst shells and gun fires and still maintained their high level of professional skills.Here we also find the aspects of humor, like the festivals or games, helped their moral to continue the harsh days of the First World War period. We also come across the diplomatic particular where the management handled the matter with well formulated strategies to survive. Thus this text reveals a huge amount of details that is needed to determine the position of nurses in the First World War period. We can easily understand the high position these women occupied in the minds of the patients but sadly the same was hardly true when it came to bureaucratism and government.If judged from Eileen Croftons point of view it was the outsiders who never shared the life of the nurses and failed to pay their due respect. But at the same time it is true that while evaluating the position of the female nurses during the period of the first World War it becomes certain that the elite of the society hardly paid any respects to these brave service providers so far though some of the noted female nurse came from this class. However, the main concerns to the nurses were the well being of the soldiers and there they were highly respected and honored.Goldsteins text presents a distinguishable angle to the entire discussion and along with it places a very interesting point of view too. Goldstein aims at the perspective that states that the impact of gender difference and the importati on of gender differences are most visible during the period of war. Yet controversial arguments, and the dispersion of erudition across scho stretch forthic regulations, have covered understanding of the character of war and its implementation on the aspects of gender.According to the writer the affect war cause on gender and the gender difference affect the nature of war is mutual and simultaneous. To venture this mode of circumstances the author explores the aspect of war in general throughout the history of human conflict and notes in a lively yet very authoritative manner that almost always women were excluded from direct combat situation. The write even indicates that this has been the general norm and it is applicable for all race and culture. However the author did mention and evaluated the incidents where the women fought in direct battlefield with much success.In the same context the author also mentions the nature of male complexity in the parameters of social behaviors ca use mainly due to secretion of testosterone. This part is a very interesting topic as it looks upon the basic aspects of the concepts relating to the anatomical structure of femininity and masculinity under the parameters of war and particularly the First World War. To explain the import the author illustrates the book into seven broad chapters that deals various aspects of war and the subsequent affects on women in general.The first chapter is A Puzzle The Cross-Cultural Consistency of Gender Roles in War where the homogenous nature of womens position is discussed in the light of war. The second chapter is named Women Warriors The Historical Record of Female Combatants where the role of active friendship is noted. The third chapter is Bodies The Biology of Individual Gender where the author looks into the details of the differences between the sexes. The fourth chapter seeks the social position of women and it named Groups Bonding, Hierarchy, and Social Identity.The fifth chapte r deals with the representation of war as a means of construction of male identity and thus it is named Heroes The Making of Militarized Masculinity. The sixth chapter is named Conquests Sex, Rape, and Exploitation in Wartime and it looks into the brutal aspects of male dominance during war and thus reveals the detrimental affects that war causes in the ramification of the women. The last chapter concludes the entire scenario and tries to venture into the connection of women and war and thus it is named Reflections The Mutuality of Gender and War.It should be mentioned that according to Goldstein the First World War included greater participation of women than before predominantly as nurses. However she points out that it is not natural for a human being to kill but during the First World War it was found that women along with men were forced to commit this act and according to the author this was a direct affect of the War. To prove the points the author presents a number of illust rations that includes drawings, graphics, photographs and related materials from numerous scholarly texts that include diverse academic disciplines.This book by Goldstein is a unique approach shot in the context of content and approach and it could well be stated that it is a fascinating book to read apart from being a book on a distinct issue that reflect much about the position of women during the WWI. (Goldstein, 2001) The article by Margaret H. Darrow titled French Volunteer Nursing and the Myth of War Experience in WWI is a true text to conclude this entire paper. This is because this article emphasizes on the aspects of the First World War and the involvement of women, particularly female nurses in it.Though it predominantly describes the details of women of France it is nevertheless reveals the position of women during the First World War and particularly about the nurses unlike Goldstein who presents the total perspective and the relation between woman and war. Darrow menti ons that women were very much involved in the First World War than previous battles but it was mostly indirect in nature. She mentions that the women joined the jobs that were left behind by their men and even took active participation ministry of military affairs but maximum and direct involvement of the women in the First World War was as nurse.The author clearly mentions this and emphasize that the position of the women at this war was almost equivalent and important as that of the male doctors and it could be further stated that a huge amount of inspirations were drawn from the dedication to the service by the female nurse during the First World War. This is the most important point to be mentioned and this is what makes the involving of the female nurses relevant in the context of the First World War. (Darrow, 1996)In conclusion it should be stated that the being a part of a noble profession it was the opportunity for the female nurses of the First World War to gain wideness t o their community and help substantially to the ultimate cause of the purpose. It is true that they were often set badly or were not given their dues for their hard works but if we take into consideration the basic position of women in the society or the importance that they enjoyed before the First World War it could be a well placed statement that the First World War provided a respected position for the female nurses in the cantonment and in the society as well.

Condom Use and its Myths Essay Example for Free

Condom Use and its Myths EssayIn the first summary of a peer reviewed article, an article was found called Sexual Coercion, literal Aggression, and Condom Use Consistency among College Students. The journal in which this article was found is Journal of American College Health, Vol. 59, nary(prenominal) 4 pp.273-280.The greater hypothesis of this article was the staggering coalition of versed coercion, which is the forcefulness of people to habituate peer pressure, alcohol, or separate measures to get their sexual desires met. The intent of the article was also very strong with the condom utilize metrical composition amongst its research group. Which, this author finds to be the important statistic and what the final draft leave alone be based upon.The research that was conducted in the article was from a mid-sized college in the south eastern United Sates. The authors and researchers got together 600 undergraduate students and asked them questions based on the congeneri c research. Questions like, I insulted or swore at my partner?, I used insults to make my partner have sex, I know that if my partner is drunk enough they wont make me use a condom, etc. A large number of questions and evidence were conducted however the staggering number was the condom use numbers from freshman-senior. The number declined at a rapid rate. Proving what I was trying to hypothesizeThe older you get, the less condoms are used.As previously stated 600 people were chosen at random, 150 freshmen, 150 sophomores, 150 juniors, and 150 seniors. They were all emailed the survey, and only 148, roughly 24.7 completed them. This makes the research style survey or questionnaire. The staggering sequel from the research was that 30.4% of the surveyed students used condoms all the time, where 26.7% reported never using both means of protection.The authors of the article offer a few hypotheses about their research, which are sexually Active Students Who Report beingness Victims o f Sexual Coercion Will Be Less Likely to Use Condoms systematically (Fair, Vanyur, 2011). Sexually Active Students Who Report Being Victims of Verbal Aggression Will Be Less Likely to Use Condoms Consistently (Fair, Vanyur, 2011). Alcohol Use Will Be Associated With Episodes of Sexual Coercion and Verbal Aggression (Fair, Vanyur, 2011). Sexually Active Students Who Report Using Alcohol Before or During Abusive Episodes Will Be Less Likely to Use Condoms Consistently (Fair, Vanyur, 2011).The second of our articles if from the world of the Google leavened media, and the source for our article is Reuters. In this article author Julie Steenhuysen describes the current numbers of sexually active teens to their adult counterparts, and their condom use statistics. When the article starts with, U.S. teens are not as reckless as some people might think when it comes to sex, and they are much more likely to use condoms than people over 40, according to a survey released on Monday that could help guide public health policy ( Steenheysun, J. 2006). it has to be good.The research used in this article is from sex researchers at Indiana University and paid for by Trojan condom maker Church Dwight Co. At first glance this author didnt see anything staggering wrong with their choice in researcher, just after some examination and the article lack of tables, or any other entropy made this author think. Is this data accurate, and who were the constants in the survey pool.Some of the evidence this article gives us is, Condom use is higher among black and Hispanic Americans than among whites, and is terminal among people over 40, the nationally representative Internet survey of 5,865 Americans aged 14 to 94 found (Steenheysun, J. 2006). Only 14 percent of 14-year-old boys reported any kind of sexual interaction with a partner in the prior three months, but almost 40 percent of 17-year-old males did(Steenheysun, J. 2006). In this study, somewhere mingled with 70 and 80 percen t of adolescents reported condom use at their most recent vaginal intercourse (Steenheysun, J. 2006). There were other statistics pertaining to our topic but we will leave that at that for now.In this article there were no conclusions or hypothesis about the data, but it is clear that the data (as un researchable as it is) did announce for itself. Indeed there is a correlation between adolescent condom use and that of adults.Scholarly Articles vs. Popular MediaIn the world of the internet and all other forms of media blasphemy the facts and lack thereof can be very twisted and exposed in ways that make them seem more legitimate. While in reality most of the articles and sources found in popular media are just words with no backing vocals. Both of the articles had similar information however the articles dissent immensely on how they present there evidence and the facts themselves.

How Motivational Theories Are Used In Asda

How motivational Theories Are Used In AsdaThe main intention of this project is to explore how motivational theories employ in Asda to induce its staffs to carry out their silk hat to the organization.The reason why I selected the above theme is, as an employer at the Asda some condemnations I wonder how each(prenominal) the works atomic number 18 going well and smoothly. Then I found the answer for my question, which is all beca drill up of the motivational techniques utilise by the Asda. And the separate reason is, I can able to realise use full primary selective development, from my Managers and colleagues, and from the customers via primary research and secondary data like smart set reports, articles and comp whatever daylightbooks enjoinly. Since I had a limited time I thought it will be help full, if I selected the company where am working.HypothesisSince motivation is definitive in the productivity of employees, the importance of knowing what motivation theory is most effective and efficient that could generate higher productivity, commitment and satisfaction to employees is significant as a problem of this study.Literature ReviewMotivation is a one word, which leads success for all the organization around the world. Many theorists talked many about this. curiously Mitchell (1982), who given common characteristics to motivation, Taylor, F. W, and Harper and Row (1947) supposed in financial desires in inspiration, hardly Motivation is the driving force which fulfils needs fit in to flail spirit, 2003. Similar to this there argon many theorist suggested their view towards motivation. They are Wilbert Scheer (1979), Thwala Monese, n. Though all doesnt know about the theories these are ineffective, tho will help to identify the incorrect ways of motivation.ObjectivesI would like to reach out the aims, which are stated below finished conducting this researchEvaluating the techniques made by the Asda to motivate Customer service Assistance and Managers.Analyzing whether the employees are motivated by those techniques. investigating whether customer gained good service through those techniques.Identifying advantages gained through those techniques to the Organization.Suggesting some techniques to the Organization.MethodologyThis analysis mainly apply both the Primary and secondary researches equalizely. Though according to the title uses of primary data should be more compare to the Secondary, but due to the limited sources and time secondary research in like manner conducted relatively equal with some other. In both its major two types are used while cond ucting collection the data. This drive analysis will operate on the idea that the use of classic motivational theory of Maslows hierarchy of needs, and the Total theory at the organization. Managers use mostly motivational theories commonly, to encourage their employees to get a good out put from them. Motivation, which is vast, issue, hence there are many theories are stated. In point to maximize the employees effectiveness and increase the productivity buss using these theories even without knowing it. However these theories are applied all over the stupefy from small business to multi billion business.Motivation and Its TheoriesMotivation directs individual fashion. It is in the interest of an employer to know how to motivate employees behavior for the employers benefit.The four most Common Motivational Characteristics Definitions, which are stated by Mitchell (1982), areMotivation isType defied as individual phenomenon.Described usually as intentionalMultifacetedHelps to predict the behaviorMotivation is the driving force within individuals that drive them physiologicall y and psychologically to pursue one or more goals to fulfil their needs or expectations (Lam Tang 2003). For Wilbert Scheer (1979), To maintain motivation it is to create and maintain the climate which brings harmony and equilibrium into the entire work group for the benefit of all who are involved. Since it is the work of a manager to employ effective motivation, he/she should always aware of the environment and the status condition of his/her employees. Furthermore, motivation means an inner wholesome desire to exert parkway without the external stimulus of money. It is the ability of indoctrinating the personnel with a unity of purpose and maintaining a continuing, harmonious relationship among all people (Thwala Monese, n. d).Motivation plays a resilient role in fulfilling goals, objectives of an firm by trying to motivate, inspire, and raising their satisfaction and self-esteem in order to be highly productive that in turn will lead to the fulfilment of organizations goals and objectives. Thus to Robin DeCenzo (1995271), cited by Thwala and Monese, motivation is the willingness to exert high level of effort to reach organizational goals, conditioned by the efforts ability to satisfy some individual need. While Campbell and Pritchard (1976), defines motivation as a dependent and independent set of relationships, which explains the amplitude, direction, and persistence of a behaviour retentivity constant the effects of skills, aptitude, and understanding of a task and the constraints operating in the work environment.The essential of knowing the character of motivation, principles and theories are all-important in order that inappropriate function of motivation can be presumed and avoided. Even so, all motivational theories and strategies are valuable yet, not all can be applied in certain organization for some constraints.There are many competing Theories, which attempt to explain motivation at workMotivation Theories can be classified as followsMotiv ation is watched from various views. Taylor, F. W. Scientific Management, Harper and Row (1947) believed in economic needs in motivation. According to him motivation is nothing but what the workers wanted from their employers more than anything else is high wages. This approach is called Rational-Economic concept of motivation. But Nicola Horlick, (former Managing Director, Morgan Grenfell Investment Management.) He was convinced that the success of any business depended on having people and prompt them properly. As he thought and he decided motivation was not just about money. It was about creating an environment in which people enjoyed working.MethodologyIn this research I have used both qualitative and quantitative methods of research. The use of qualitative research is comparatively less(prenominal) with the quantitative. The majority of the Qualitative data related to Theories and past studies of the motivational theories. The quantitative research applied to gather the inform ation from the employees to find out what is motivation according to them.Primary ResearchIn this research Primary data collection is important for the reason that the research includes the opinion of the staffs. Though there are many of techniques are used to collect raw data. I have selected some methods in field research when considering the resources and time.QuantitativeThe quantitative data is collected mostly from the questionnaire. Since I had a less sum up of time to analyze the information, this type of data helped me more to manage the time.QuestionnaireClose ended questions like How many? and Yes or No? questions are used to collect the quantitative primary data.This type of question is used to test observable fact. Though it is testing fact, it wont develop the fact and give other suggestion of the responder.The advantage of this method is, focus is concise and narrow, and hence which took a reduced amount time.QualitativeFrom the interviews and the brain storming disc ussion most of the raw qualitative information is pull together. Comparably the lesser amount of data is collected from the Questionnaire.InterviewInterview took place with the employer, which lasted approximately eight minutes.Interview is conducted in a limited time period in which responder might not have time to share the information. And also the responder is well known to the interviewer, where analogy of sharing the matter may differ.Though the facts are collected directly the reliability of the data is high, we can guess and understand information if we didnt get them, and also we can ask more to develop the task.Brain Storming DiscussionCommon discussion took place regarding the topic in the break time during the break time in the organization where they dont know that they are pickings place in this study.As an employee it is much easier to me to chat about the topic with the colleagues and to get the live open from them while working. This approach is easier to me and r eliable.Although they are working together there will be a gap betwixt the people individually who wont deal openly with all. Though there are chances to collect unreliable information.ObservationI observed the group twelve hours per week for two weeks, focusing mostly on conversations at monthly meetings and especially those conversations, which related to motivation and the awarding system issues.Secondary ResearchIn this study, secondary research used to get the information mostly regarding to the organization. This research was done to collect already existing data that was collected by someone or by organization. I used both major categories of secondary research.Internal secondary dataThe sources of some secondary data that I collected came from within the organization this type is called native secondary data.From the institutions department little information gathered from the own reports that represent a potential of valuable data from the line manager. For instance how to motivate employees.These records were collected as an employee otherwise this is not possible to others. Hence the records are reliable.Although these were collected from the system these are depended in the employer whether it is applied or not. So from this we cant flyer the real out come. remote secondary dataThe collected data which are published by other organization, or in other journal and website, few are collected from local library books are called as external secondary data.From the several websites and other past researches the gathered are linking between these types.Due to the IT revolutionised world it was easy to collect these categorised data in the given time and with lower limit source. No need of wasting them by conducting the kindred research.Though it easy and accessible. It may have been collected some time ago and there for sometime it wont suit for the research. Maslows hierarchy of need (figure IV) state the needs of employees in an ascending order. According to hierarchy of needs the fist, second, and for some extend fourth levels can be satisfied by the financial reward, which evidently shown in this research.Though there are minimum amount of employees are rewarded, the desire to work in the organisation is still high, which clearly state us that public recognition, results, com petition, status and sometimes-even fear also motivating employees. From the figure II, without any age restriction majority of the staffs are willing to do their best in the job, the majority is non-awarded person.In the questionnaires given large amount of approximately all marked Yes to the question about their goals. This is the Goal theory, which is stated above. As an employee and from my observation goal theory is used more efficiently in the organisation.InterviewThe interview with the manager brought the information that they dont know these motivational theories, but they knew the techniques and the principles. Most of them are guided by their area managers and asked to follow some techniques through them, which was made confidential by the organization. They were conducting monthly meeting and area manager used to assist the line manager during his visit to the store.Brain Storming Discussion AnalysisBrain storming which peel off few staffs worries. They are having a th ought that rewarding system is only rewarded to the some section of staffs who are working in the cafeteria in the asda. Although they are accepting that they are having more scope to perform well.Observation AnalysisObservation reveals the truth that although the rewarding system is most aureate way, while they were talking they are interchanging their rewarded vouchers, and they are expecting to become a stars which is one of the valued system made byAsda.Secondary Data AnalysisInternal Sources of DataThere is a Staff Development Program (SDP) was undertaken by the Asda Colleague Circle. This will develop the personality of the staffs, when they are not performing there best and doing less in their work they were personally asked to conduct manager and they used to guide them to do their best.Performance appraisal program is conducted to increase the hourly paid employees salaries, for those who are working for the good standard and showing their brilliance at Asda. This will ob viously make the employee to stay with the organization for lengthy period of time.External Sources of DataThe time when Andy Bond chief executive officer of Asda, the company was in financially in a good position and the employee self-esteem was remarkably short. The company was experiencing losses, the CEO he was faced with the daunting task of play the rebellious company region. Simon consummated this task for three reasons he modifiedThe organizational culture feature important leadership skillsMotivated employees skills.In order to further motivate staffs of the changing image and the service that Asda is becoming physical changes are commencing to take shape all over at every Asda.A program has in progress for now and it includes more than just the workforce but it is functioning. What in real(a) fact constructs this victorious at the member of staffs stage are the awareness by labours that their anxiety was addressed, it really triggers off them. In their division that the y believe nearly each employee at Asda can express at least part of the Team. They may not all has it perfect but the company is slowly turning in this new directionResult and ConclusionResultGoal theories, Attribution theory, Equity theories of Motivation, Porter and Lawler Expectancy theory, Maslows Hierarchy of Needs theory are the major, numerous theories used at the Asda in order to encourage their staffs, which are successfully completed by the firm. All sort of employees exclusive of age, gender, and position are enjoying and doing there work with job satisfaction due to firms area managers, line managers and the assistance managers hidden motivational procedures, techniques, and principles (Theories).Although the case study finalizing the theories functioned correctly and the result is positive degree that workers are inspired, happy, encouraged and over all motivated there are some restrictions are there, and also investigation carried out by a member of the employee hence the chances of liability is there between colleagues and managers which are kept closed.ConclusionIn conclusion, there are a number of theories used by Asda. Some of that are out dated, as I mentioned above, many area and line managers are using these techniques without knowing the theories. As a student and an employee after analyzing these information and situation managers should learn these theories and related principles in order to improve there staffs productivity and to apply and inspire them in the correct manner. And I would like to prefer them to study them and re-formulating them freshly to the new modernized 21st century and to bring them into play.

The Modern Theory Of Business Strategy Business Essay

The Modern Theory Of Business Strategy Business EssayStrategizing is more more than just visioning, forecasting, think and reviewing. In the new-made rapidly changing economy, all grave tasks of dodging have been redefined as issues of implementation. These days strategizing is concerned with the geminate between the internal capabilities of the company and its orthogonal environment. The modern subject of rail line outline is a set of analytic tools proficiencys for understanding better, and so influencing, a companys carriage in its actual and potential marketplace.As scheme today is a subject of application the obvious pigment disciplines for strategy ar economics and organizational culture. One needs to employ them to define a structure in which the litigate of strategy formulation and its implementation atomic number 18 bound to welcomeher.Putting it simply, strategy refers to the technique or direction virtuoso would adopt in achieving a certain objective. F or business pur tucker outs, objectives are unremarkably more precisely defined exploitation numerical values 10% ontogenesis in gross gross gross revenue in the next year could be an example of a business objective (sales). Objectives disaccord depending upon the conditions one may find himself in and consequently would result in the adoption of varied strategies.Business strategy refers to the combined strategies of single business unattack adequate to(p) or a strategical business unit (SBU) in a diversified corporation. A firm moldiness devise a business strategy that incorporates either cost leadership, differentiation or focus and the like in order to achieve a sustainable competitive vantage and long-term mastery in its areas or industries.1b) How strategy arsehole be constructed and carried out effectively, even by scummy businesses?There could be political strategies, business strategies, social strategies and so on. It is nothing but natural for strategies to differ in matter but they all share some common issues that get addressed in the process. So, in order to work on strategic substance it is imperative to understand the issues that need to be answered in our strategic choices.Firstly, strategies are to be thought of in long term basis. Strategies are formed keeping in mind the vision of an organization that avails further decide the direction to be walk outn. Vision is fundamentally the broad reason for an organizations existence. This organism the first structural block.Secondly, strategies are formulated under the characteristics of an organizations strengths and weaknesses. The mental imagerys and competencies of a firm help define and shape the variety of strategic choices available to the precaution to choose from. This forms the second major structural block and alongside the first lays the basic foundation for strategy formation.The lodge in is basically a web where we need to analyse the current domain of the organizat ions activities and potential future expansion, the culture of the organization, the values and expectations of stakeholders, the operational and business environment and the competition. Once this analysis is through, strategies rump be derived that help to provide a competitive advantage in the current environment after considering its expected future outcome. This aspect is actually great as strategies cannot be altered time and again. They should keep room for a little change as they have to stand the test of time and at that placefore need to be aligned correspondingly to dynamic business environments.To sum it up, strategies are essentially long term choices of an organization that define the manner in which competitive advantage shall be obtained, alongside the fulfillment of stakeholders expectations, within the boundaries of the organizations strengths and weaknesses. Evidently, the process of developing strategies is a tedious one and requires concrete analysis of many inter-related factors. It is super complex and has an inherent uncertainty about its conception. However, a careful analysis of the business environment including that of contests can greatly reduce this complexity.As a strategy developer one has to be in harmony with the vagueness of the opportunity costs for a particular strategic choice and once decided, should focus entirely on the elect strategic direction. All actions are linked to the strategy of the organization and hence a thorough analysis of various direct and indirect factors is critical to its success.The nearly important strategic choice a small organization can accomplish is prepare to do battle with the future, which includes five steps. ill-treat 1 look both threats and windows of opportunities for the vision and mission of the organization.Step 2 Decide how to react to these emerging threats and opportunities.Step 3 Identify the source from which those risks and opportunities get out come from.Step 4 Identif y when the risks will hit or if the opportunity is really valuable.Step 5 Execute necessary actions to mitigate the threats or take advantage of the opportunities.Strategic formulation for a small business doesnt have to be as formal, or as detailed as with a large company. The virtually important step to take is to strike up a discussion with your customers, employees, vendors, investors, and do your homework about your competitors. It helps to talk about your strategy with a partner, advisor, or trusted consultant to reduce am king-sizeduity and beat some focus to your mind around the strategic issues that could impact your business in the future. The biggest mistake a small business owner can do for his organization is, be undisposed(p) or surprised by unfolding future events. withal if he simply thinks things through in his mind and then briefly share his strategic choices or decisions with his employees, he will be ahead of the curve and enabling people to understand how t hey can connect with his strategy.For a small business working toward a strategic plan the one thing that can draw and quarter a lot of difference is to commit all the strategic decision to paper. This is one move ahead of many of its competitors. Inviting the bullneckedest employees to respond to the strategic issues, concerns and getting them mixed so they feel some ownership in this simple process brings a clear and thorough insight into the strategic planning. Arranging a strategy adaptation meeting with all hands twice a year for a couple of hours to clarify the direction, make adjustments and respond to questions is yet another time-proven route of facing the changing business demographics.The strategic analysis should look at six aspects of the business.The customers Figure out who your customers are now, who they will be in the future, how they are changing, and what they will want in the future.The people and talent What skills and capabilities will be unavoidable to a ddress the threats and opportunities? How many people, what kind of new roles will be needed, how will peoples roles change in the future to handle the threats and grab the opportunities? Will the organization grow and are we developing the leadership to manage the changes coming?The Suppliers and Vendor stool they give you what will be required to meet future challenges? Are in that location new offerings that can help you resolve your particular business issues?The Competitors Who are the players in your market? What are the strengths they possess? How can you take advantage of their vulnerabilities with your unique capabilities?The Products and Services Are you preparing something new and value added for your customers or commitrs which enable them to be more productive?The Organizational infrastructure technology What will the organization need to do differently in the future to keep up with new and emerging customers? Are you using technology to improve productivity?Strateg y really isnt rocket science quite a it is a common sense and a willingness to ask some challenging questions and bringing the workable answers. Be willing to think it through, communicate with others, and solicit additional perspectives. Writing down the conclusions and sharing them with the rest of the organization. Lastly, issuing a call to work on strategic action each day to compliment the routine tactical work that has to be done to pay the bills and meet current obligations. All of the above help the small business stay ahead of the curve.1c) The value of using key analytical tools to help in the strategy-making processStrategic digestThis is all about analysing the strength of position of business and understanding the important external factors that may influence that position. The process of Strategic Analysis can be helped by a number of tools, includingPEST Analysis a technique for understanding the environmentin which a business operates See adjunct A for detailsPor ters Five Forces Analysis a technique for identifying the forces which affect the level of competition within an industry See Appendix A for detailsCompetitor Analysis a broad range of techniques and analysis that seeks to summarise a businessesoverall competitive positionCritical Success Factor Analysis a technique to identify those key areas in which a business must outperform the competition in order to succeed get up Analysis a useful summary technique for summarising the key issues arising from an assessment of a businesses internalposition and externalenvironmental influences.Analytical methods and tools are key to ensuring that consistency and an appropriate level of rigour is applied to the analysis. The aim of the analytical tool is to sharpen the focus of the analysis and to ensure a methodical and a balanced come up.All analytical tools rely on historical and statistical data to generalize future assumptions. It is important to exercise caution when interpreting st rategic analysis results. Otherwise the analysis may be influenced by preconceived notions within the formation which seek to validate a particular strategic assumption.One of the key skills of a strategic analyst is in understanding which analytical tools or techniques are most appropriate to the objectives of the analysis. One of the most common analytical tool used in devising a business strategy is jam AnalysisSWOT AnalysisA SWOT analysis is a simple but widely used tool that helps in understanding the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats involved in a project or business activity.It starts by defining the objective of the business activity and identifies the internal and external factors that are important to achieving that objective. strengths and weaknesses are usually internal to the organisation, while opportunities and threats are usually external. Often these are plotted on a simple 22 matrix.Strengths What does your organisation do better than others? What are your unique selling points? What do your competitors and customers in your market perceive as your strengths? What is your organisations competitive edge?Opportunities What political, economic, social-cultural, or technology (PEST) changes are taking place that could be favourable to you? Where are there currently gaps in the market or unfulfilled demand? What new innovation could your organisation bring to the market? helplessness What do other organisations do better than you? What elements of your business add little or no value? What do competitors and customers in your market perceive as your weakness?Threats What political, economic, social-cultural, or technology (PEST) changes are taking place that could be unfavourable to you? What restraints to you face? What is your competition doing that could negatively impact you?2) Based on the expression study, carry out an analysis of Making It openhandeds strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threatsStrengthsMaking It B ig has had wonderful years over the past couple of years. For the last 10 years MIB enjoyed unswerving average sales increase of 12%. This was made possible due to the fact that Cynthia, the owner of the business, contributed significant amount of her time and effort to keep the property flow test.Cynthia learned the whole handicraft of a business at an early age and rode on the surge of the feminism movements. She was already mentally prepared and economically challenged to take on the risky path of setting up her own venture. Her earlier stint with Cheap Frills too enabled her to learn the tricks of trade and get really close to the suppliers, manufacturers, whole-sellers and customers. This proved to be a foundational platform that let her project her thoughts and evaluate an opportunity that can be filled. Hence, the birth of Making It Big took place.This opportunity was positivistic-size clothing manufacturing selling business. It was only possible for her to evaluate an d pick such an opportunity because she was able to put herself in the shoes of the her potential customers. She, being a female and a fat one at that, helped her empathize her customers and bring to them a product that can truly add value to their lives. Besides, she had ad hominem beliefs of strengthening fat women. For that she had to attend various seminars, feminism conferences, fashion shows and other such social events to market her clothing collection of the season as easily as learning more about the reservations of her customers. She had to use these platforms to extract awareness and to strengthen the fat category of female population to lead a formula life. This step of approaching a new customer bracket is always risky and frought with FUD phenomena among customers. FUD phenomena also known as Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt, leaves a whole set of problems of manufacturing, trade and selling for the niche to be addressed. It also turned out in the very beginning that no m anufacturer is willing to accept orders to custom make plus-sized ladies garments for a new venture.To overcome these challenges, Cynthia needed a partner, an expert in the area of ladies garments manufacturing, a dedicated sales person, a manufacturing facility, long list of suppliers, transporters, stitching lag and other office personnel. Moreover, she was also supposed to raise awareness and market her products to the category of fat women who usually stay indoor.One of her strengths played in the initial stages of her setup was a brilliant discovery of an expert seamstress as a contractor who helped MIB hire/train more such experts. This figure out a major issue of getting the staff ready to take on the challenges that may lay ahead. It has been observed over years that staffing alone can take running businesses down if care is not taken and victorious businesses have always invested largely on human resources functions. Therefore Cynthia focused on selecting and grooming a culture among employees who were hard-working and committed individuals. This strengthened the confidence of MIBs management on employees performance especially during times of tight money supply. This enables management to take sound decisions and face competition without fear of being wiped out.Another factor that improved the success rate of MIB grandly was that Cynthia had 2 parallel businesses Cheap Frills and MIB running in parallel with one complementing the other. In such circumstances, its easy to loose sight of the direction due to the division of owners attention. However, Cynthia managed it wellhead and had highly motivated staff to take care of both of her businesses. This helped Cynthia maintain a healthy level of specie flow and also to acquire short-term credit from financial institution. Since, the two businesses were identical therefore there was also some overlap in their customers. Later on, when Cynthia dissolved one of her business, Cheap Frills, she was n ot only able to cause cash on liquidating its assets but she also converted it to MIBs warehouse. In short, running two businesses had a symbiotic family relationship not parasitic and when she sold one of them it benefited the other even more.When it comes to manufacturing, MIB also met with a good luck in that it developed a product line that could carry over the season and distillery look new item because of different colors. This helped MIB manage SKUs and inventory at the very early stages of manufacturing. This also streamlined MIBs manufacturing processes so that the owner-manager could divert her attention on the more pressing tasks of sales and marketing.Another strength that MIB was successfully able to capitalize on was the idea of using various marketing channels retail store ads, catalog for mail-in orders and a comprehensive website. Especially, when it comes to mail-in orders, Cynthia used a very unconventional approach of reaching out to the customer segment of fa t women. This approach let MIB reach true potential customers, read fat women, rather than shot-gunning all the housholds in the area for search of potential customers. This caused MIB to develop strong relationship with new customers and repeat sales were possible apart from saving tremendous amounts of marketing budgets for a yet outgrowth MIB.WeaknessesOne of the biggest weaknesses that was figured out for MIB is the improvisational flair of business that cannot cope with change. This style, although good for executing short-term goals while maintaining a tight grip on cash flow, is difficult to adapt to changing external factors. Cynthia, being the owner-manager, did not have a business degree to start with. She was working on her business purely through determination and intuition. This can bring short-term success but to really succeed in the global scale and expand the business beyond the territorial boundaries, one has to endeavour into the farming of experimentation and critical analysis of the various medium-term strategies and its market acceptance.Secondly, Cynthias partner Janet wasnt contributing such(prenominal) in the early days of MIB as a business startup. Although, she provided the much needed cash other financial help but she lacked dedication. This naturally led Cynthia to take on the role of both the partners and hence the role of strategian in MIB was lost forever. Had Janet been taking care of some of the daily sales and marketing matters then Cynthia would be in a better shape to use the above mentioned analytical tools to provide regular insight into business and the way to look forward to. This lack of strategic planning skills among the top management of MIB caused sales growth to come to stall.Another weakness cited in the cuticle study was that MIB was serving a niche market. Niche markets are always a chafe for sales and marketing professional. Customers, fat women staying indoors, were hard to find and their buying patte rns, no prior experience or passion of shopping, caused MIB to look for alternate channels of marketing.The case study also points to a claim by industry experts that most retailers dont know how to sell to larger or fat customers. The reason for that was the buying conduct of those customers in that those women were not working due to their hesitation of the social gathering in general. so those women were confined to the indoors and therefore they have to approached within the boundaries of their household. Even though MIB tried various marketing channels but they were still not their. The financial figures show that most of their sales were within their base state, California, and therefore there was a huge market outside their base state that still needs to be accessed.Lastly, the case study reveals that MIB employees are over-worked so there is a chance of them leaving MIB despite of their loyalty. This problem is not limited to the leaving of managers only but also to all of the staff members within the organisation. all year, industry experts quote a huge replacement cost associated with an employee. Therefore its in the best interest of firms to provide enough benefits and compliant human resource policies to retain existing employees. It has also been observed that small firms often make the mistake of not hiring enough employees twinned the increase in their business activity. This in conclusion leads to employees being overworked and eventually leaving the firm for one of their competitor with better work ethics. The weakness has also been found in MIBs case.OpportunitiesThere are a lot of opportunities that MIB can exploit to project its sales and come out as a successful firm in the long run.In the very early days of MIB setting up its business, Cynthia developed a small line of credit with a bank to improve growth and opportunity. This is very important to enable a startup fulfill the orders that are beyond the financial qualification of th e firm. This immediate or sometimes seasonal surge in sales can only be managed by taking short-term loans. MIB easily managed this opportunity and was able to keep sales growing at a steady rate of 12% over 10 years.Another opportunity that knocked on the MIBs door was the fact that Cynthia had no familiarity with mail-order business rules. Those rules were in fact good for marketing of only general household products but MIB was serving a niche market. Had Cynthia invested heavily in a certain mail-order marketing firm, it would have caused severe budgeting problems with no tangible impact on actual sales growth. That niche of a customer segment only stayed indoors and was not very easily approachable. Thus an unconventional approach helped MIB reach its true customers and enable it to cause recurring sales to existing customers.To reach those difficult to find customer, Cynthia regularly attended trade shows to keep up with the trends and new potential customers. This helped her stay in touch with few of her existing customers as well as attract new ones. Since, MIB needed brand awareness and brand intuition all throughout its lifespan apart from saving finances from huge marketing budgets therefore it was prudent to specifically target the potential customers in such events. Cashing on this opportunity caused MIB to stick in this niche marketplace.Another bright opportunity that was unveiled was that women plus-size market is growing in 2000s to $47 billion in 2005. MIB being an established player in this market only has to increase its capacity and reach out to customers. This rather unique opportunity that even the statistics agree is hard to miss for MIB. Moreover, careful strategic planning and evaluation of the outcome can result in tremendous growth of MIB in the years to come.Another NPD groups survey revealed 35% adult Americans as overweight and 26% as obese, 60% women wear 12 plus size and 16% teenage girls are overweight. This revelation is pr oof enough for Cynthia to invest in finding the right mix of short-term and long-term strategies to hike up its sales and in the process increase market share.Thus there are ample growth opportunities that MIB needs to cash in and raise its business value.ThreatsThere are numerous threats that were mentioned in the case study. However, how many of these MIB has been able to identify and take necessary steps is what we have yet to see.One of its competitor Charming Shoppes has a huge market share in plus size apparel industry. Charming Shoppes is acquiring its competitors and growing its business annually with billions of sales and thousands of retail outlets. Taking this competitor head on is difficult and unmanageable. However, the more troublesome situation is if Charming Shoppes shows interest in taking over MIB. not only will this result in doubts among its customers, suppliers and other stakeholders but it will also create an environment of uncertainty among its employees. Thi s will cause reduction in the productivity of its employees internally and loosing its sales instantly externally. This hostile bid may eventually result in Cynthia succumbing to pressure and even agreeing on weaker terms to sales her business to the giant competitor.Another threat that this niche market is facing is that famous brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Old Navy, have also started releasing plus-size women apparel. With big brands enter this market, there is little room for breathing left for smaller players like MIB. IT currently does not carry any brand recognition. Therefore big brands pose a significant threat to the existing sales of MIB.The market leader, Charming Shoppes, is investing heavily on sophisticated MIS to keep detailed profiles of customers and thus push down direct sales. MIB currently does not possess the financial backbone to undertake such a huge task. The best it can do is to hire more effective sales and marketing personnel to increase market reach be yond its base city and state in order to beat the approach of the competition.Lastly, as can be seen from its balance sheet that MIB has more business coming from mail-orders and internet. However, it has been observed over the past year by the top management of MIB that mail-orders are decreasing over the past few quarters. Therefore, it needs to immediately look for alternatives to mail-orders in order to keep running a positive cash flow.3) From your analysis above, write a considered assessment of what needs to be done to develop and strengthen Making It Bigs competencies and capabilities, to the point where the company has acompetitive advantage.The SWOT analysis conducted above presents a picture for MIB that if proper steps are not taken immediately, it could risk loosing its business to the competition. The owner-manager, Cynthia, needs to take helm of personal business and be able to come up with a business strategy and a plan to implement it that not only neutralizes all the threats but also drastically contribute to the growth of MIB as an enterprise.One important part of the overall strategy that MIB needs to develop must include augmenting the strength of already hard-working and committed employees in the form of better marketing sales professionals. Care must be taken that the hired marketing personnel are able to launch effective campaigns that can drive sales even in hard economic times. Cynthia herself has not been able to fulfill this role properly and there are currently no one in this position within the organisation.Small business generally do not have the resources ot plan and grease ones palms external advice and support they are very susceptible to small environmental changes owner-managers may not have the necessary experience for managing all aspects of a small business and owner-managers cannot devote a lot of time to consciously working through plans because of day-to-day work pressures. A consequence of this is that owner-mana gers tend to have a shorter and more functional emphasis on planning.(S. Carter D. Jones-Evans, 2006)Therefore this emphasis on marketing can cause positive change for MIB at large.Another strategic planning that MIB needs to conduct is to look for sales outside the confines of its base city and state of California. Even though MIB is not geared for globalisation just yet but it is in a position to dramatically increase its market share as well as its brand recognition by effectively marketing its products in the rest of the states of Americas. MIB has a very strong manufacturing arm and an able manufacturing manager, which can handle increasing the doing capacity as well as increase in order processing.Going beyond the psychological boundaries of its base city and state isnt easy. MIB may have to work on new partnerships with garments retailers in other parts of America. This can eventually result in reduction of financial pressure due to marketing and also raise its brand reco gnition among the new set of customers across the country.It has also been observed that the mail-in orders are decreasing over the last few quarters. This may be because of the increase in the usage of internet based business. MIB needs to invest heavily on generating more business electronically by investing heavily on its e-commerce infrastructure. This will not only prove to be a viable alternative but if executed correctly can give significant acclivity to the existing sales.Another aspect that Cynthia as an owner of MIB can improve upon is by hiring experienced managers with relevant educational background. It seems that the new hired managers have matching skills and relevant past experience yet they fail to build a sound strategy that can help Cynthia steer the business towards increasing sales. A couple of vocational training course of instructions may not be adequate to make these managers think outside the box. Therefore, MIB needs to invest in hiring seriously strong c andidates with relevant qualifications and education. Cynthia needs to take some vocational training as well as management courses to improve her perspective of her business and the market in general.Another aspect clearly missing from the case study as well as Cynthias perspective is that there is no mention of any SWOT analysis done for the MIBs competitors. Without a competitors analysis there can be no strategic planning that can yield significant positive change.4) How well do you think the tools and techniques for crafting and executing business strategy work for small businesses run by owner-managers with limited resources (including key staff members)?Overtime strategic planning has been evolved into a concept that is commonly considered as the most effective solution to all the business issues. Some businesses follow strategic planning so conscientiously and focus so much of their energies on their strategic plan that it seems like their primary product. Even though, appro priately executed strategic plans are wonderful. However, they must be taken as a tool of a corporation to achieve its goals, not to make them a goal unto themselves. Most importantly the strategic plans must not take most of the valuable time of employer or employees.Several business ventures also carry a misguided belief that strategic planning is reserved only for large businesses that can afford the effort, time and resources to develop a sound plan. However, a small business intends to compete against the industrial big guns in the marketplace then it is imperative to guess some of their tactics and game plans and strategic planning is a primary component of any successful and large venture. It also does not suggests that a small venture needs all the bells and whistles and the complexity of larger corporations strategic plans. For a working entrepreneur it is possible to devise a good working draft in a matter of hours that is sound enough for the small business to keep on th e course to becoming a solid competitor.The original idea of strategic planning is to set up a strategy that a small business is firing to follow over a short to medium term of time period. It can be for a specific business unit, like strategizing a production planning strategy, or it can for the whole of a business. Usually its the job of board of directors to set an overall strategy for the whole of business and to execute that high-level strategy each area of the company plans their strategy which is compliant with the overall strategy. Various businesses use various periods of time for the planning of their strategies. Basically, this time period depends on rate of change the industry is going through. In a fast-changing environment for example the internet, devising a 5-year plan is worthless. For slowly changing industries th

He used a variety of methods to kill and round his victims, and an array of weapons.The methods used to kill and attack his victims included stabbing, strangulation, and bashing and the weapons he used consisted of an array of knives, a hammer, a hacksaw and a Ball-pein hammer, which later became his signature. Peter William Sutcliff was the freshman born of six children to Kathleen a liquid and solid Catholic woman and John a man whom had an appetite for life Murder case book vol 1. It was his mothe r Kathleen that provided stability and tribute and gave him round the clock care following his birth due to the fact he was a small and weak baby. Peter grew up to be warm of his mother, more so than his father and it is reported that he would hide behind her skirt on many occasion (murder case book vol 1).During his school age Peter was bullied by other children and would regularly play truant, his grades were of a poor standard and he left school at the age of fifteen without qualifications, he embarked on a variety of jobs, all of which he was unable to hold down due to the constant lateness of his arrival at work, one job which Peter had, and had held for three years was a post as a grave digger at Bingley Cemetery, during his early adult life he was regarded as organism somewhat of a loner, deep and intr everywheret ( murder case book vol 1) and would be the subject of ridicule by his family. Peter took an interest in system building at this time and would spend hours alone training, at this time he also met his future married woman Sonia in a local taproom when he was with his work colleagues, they had a relationship which lasted for eight years before finally In 1974. In 1969 John, Peters father discovered that Kathleen his married woman was having an affair with a local officeholder and he arranged for the whole family to confront her about it, Peter was devastated it was later that year that he carried out an attack on a prostitute in Bradford following a row with her about a 10 note. He hit her on the head with a stone in a sock while out in the red light district, of which he was a frequent visitor t. In 1971 Sonia his consequently girlfriend had a mental breakdown and at this time she reported to her psychiatrist that she had heard the voice of God Wicked beyond belief, she was diagnosed as injury from schizophrenia, following her recovery she and Peter went on to marry in 1974, in less than a year of marriage Peter had carried out an atta ck on a woman, only to attack other women a short time later, and in October of 1975 claimed the life of his victim, a person place as Wilma McCann aged twenty-eight, in Leeds, she became the first in the farsighted reign of terror that Peter William Sutcliff held.In order to discuss the various theories of crime that could account for Sutcliffs deportment one will examine the various theories which have evolved over the the past twelve decades beginning with the works of Cesare Comboso 1876, he was an Italian biologist who had an interest in crime (class notes) he reported that following this study , of similar facial features in criminals such as cold-glassy blood shot eyes, thick curly hair, strong jaws, long ears and thin lips, Lombrosos findings had no scientific demonstration in support of his theories, he used correlation to identify his subjects in his study therefore we must shake off this as being inconclusive, another theory of crime was also put forward using the sa me basis as Lombrosos by William Sheldon in 1949, who identified three body types, endomorphic, mesomorphic and ectromorphic, his study was based on 400 men in rehabilitation, the majority were raise to be of a mesomorphic type, muscular, hoodlum and strong. From both of these theories we are able to reflect the step forwardance of Sutcliff with cold glassy eyes and thick curly hair. Sutcliff also had a mesomorphic body signifier therefore we must keep an open mind of these qualityicular theories. Possible explanation of the two studies could be chromosomes, some men in prisons have been found to have an extra Y in making them XYY but according to Jacobs (class notes) it could be associated with them being more aggressive. There has been no scientific evidence to prove that there is a criminal gene but that is not to say that one does not exists.Another theory put forward in order to explain crime was (Eysneck Eysneck 1970) the criminal is a neurotic extrovert (someone who sco res high on both N E) N is linked to crime through anxiety, the high E score is stimulus-hungry, engaging in thrill enhancing behaviour and is more difficult to . The EPL questionnaires Eysneck Eysneck used also found that high P scorers also were established as being aggressive, uncaring, troublesome, inhumane, insensitive to others needs and feelings, tend not to experience guilt, prefer strange and unusual things and appear foolhardy Although we have no knowledge of a questionnaire being completed by Sutcliff, one could give incidents that have occurred and situations that have taken place to reflect yet again with this theory.In September 1969 Sutcliff was arrested and charged with spill equipped for theft with a hammer, while working in the cemetery he was reported by a work mate to have a macabre sense of humour, he would lie down on a slab pretending to be a corpse with a shroud over him and make groaning noises (Murder case book ) also he would boast to workmate that he h ad stolen various items of jewellery from corpses ( wicked beyond belief) also following the job he was given at TWH Clark as a lorry driver, he posed for a publicity poster and wrote his own strange epitaph to accompany it, it read In this truck is a man whose if unleashed would rock the nation, whose dynamic energy would overpower those around him. Better let him relief? (Wicked beyond belief), and finally the crimes he committed such as stabbing a victim with a screw driver in her vagina and then going home to his wife as if nothing had ever happened.Another explanation to describe Sutcliffs behaviour is frauds tripartite derision of the personality, the most primitive part which consists of basic biological impulses or drives, the source of psychic energy or libido which operates on the pleasure principle, // and to avoid pain regardless of external circumstances it is know as the ID, followed by the ego which is the rational part or controlling self it operates on the realit y principle, holding back the impulses of the ID until they can be agreeable in society in socially approved was, and finally the superego which represents the of the values and morals of society, it is the conscience that controls the expression of the IDs impulses through moral scruples , frankincense being Sutcliffs need to attack and kill his victims and gaining satisfaction and sexual gratification in doing so while being marries to Sonia and showing concern by collecting her from work in order for her to be safe, in case she would be attacked by The Ripper (wicked beyond belief) he was never looked upon by his wife as being nothing but a normal and caring husband, he showed no guilt or remorse for his actions and following the arrest for his crimes ( all of which his wife was oblivious to) gave her an account of his actions and told her that he would pretend to be mentally ill and get 10 years in a loony bin (wicked beyond belief).Another theory can be attachment as a cause , Bowbly (1963 and 1973) his maternal deprivation hypothesis was used to explain the harmful effects of increment up in institutions, according to Bowbly short term deprivation produces distress. Deprivation produces long-term development retardation such as affectionless psychopath. Gross ( ) Given that Peter was the first born and he was cared for by his mother throughout his early life, the suggestion that a child needs a constant primary care-giver for the first two and a half to three years of his life to become stable and able to thrive to not conditional in this instance Mothers come in infancy is as important for mental health as vitamins and proteins for physical health. Bowbly (1951).One other theory of crime that can be a large deciding outcome of a conviction can be the state of ones mind when the crime was committed, such as schizophrenia, insane schizophrenia is an illness that affects the thought process of the brain, so the suffer may not be able to think logicall y, often there are hallucinations, which may be in the way of voices, visions, and the sensation of being touched, delusions are also common, schizophrenia can happen following an episode of stress, breakdown or bleak life changing event (mental health volunteer notes). In the case against Sutcliff ( there was a conflict between Dr Hugo Milme, Dr Malcolm McCulloch and Dr Terrence Kay psychiatrist who diagnosed him and the Attorney General Sir Michael Havers, who believed that Sutcliff was not suffering from schizophrenia, but was telling lies). He claimed that from the age of 20 years old he had been following instructions from God, he had heard his voice, and it told him to clean the streets of prostitutes, (Murder case book Vol 1).In order to establish the differences between a person suffering from a mental illness and a psychopath (see handout 1) are they mad or just bad. We must take on board as much information about the individual we are dealing with, which did not appear to be the case for Sutcliff. Although Sutcliff is now incarcerated in Brood moor Mental Institution, he was originally incarcerated in Parkhurst Prison, but following an attack by another inmate in March 1984 when he lost sight in one eye and needed countless stitches, his original testimony to appear mad finally became a reality.In order to conclude this discussion one must look at various events which happened to Sutcliff, of which might account for his behaviour and give an insight as to why he committed the crimes he did. As Peter was close to his mother her embarking on an affair with a policeman left him devastated, could it be that he associated this with the attack he first made in 1969 on a prostitute in Bradford following the row over money or was it the fact that the man in question was a policeman, Peter as a child was brought up as a catholic whos views on sex might have been the cause for him to attack prostitutes, what made his family ridicule him, his relationship with his siblings could that have had an effect on him, always lonely, executable jealousy of no longer having his mother all to himself, the fact he was bullied in school could all of these given him drive and ambition and he treasured to prove something, give himself status. Why was it that although he was warned and it was reported by his wife Sonia that they had a normal sex life, what made him leave traces of semen on their bodies and lie in wait them but not have intercourse with them, but not engaging in intercourse could be seen as possibly something that means procreation, he had no children of his own. No reason for this has been reported, maybe they didnt want them or were unable to have them or was he a psychopath and given the fact that he had seen Sonia suffering with schizophrenia gave him the excuse and reasoning for his behaviour should he ever be caught. Whatever the case Peter William Sutcliff, aka The Yorkshire Ripper was indeed wicked beyond belief.

Queering privilege :: Essays Papers

Queering privilegeIn any groups struggle against injustice, a glint of jealousy and bitterness seems to accompany persuasions of the oppressor and those positioned in places of privileged inwardly structures of domination. Generally it is acknowledged that there are no simple scapegoats upon whom to unequivocally level blame for all the worlds maladies, tempting as purpose and accosting such a character is. Despite the growing willingness to let go of old myths of directly responsible villains, there remains a not orthogonal urge still to describe and intellectually master (exert power over by gaining knowledge of) those who inhabit structural locations of privilege. Taking the case of Patricia Hill collins black feminism, a rather nuanced understanding of such characters is developed to better know their place. However, the accounts of this sort of simplistic anti-domination critique ultimately replicates, in its theorizing, the assimilationist incompleteness of the modes o f thought it initially rejects.For people to be structurally positioned in relatively privileged ways means that they routinely receive benefits and escape discomforts as compared to trends in another(prenominal) people. Usually these trends about what is routine and how other people live rely on some creation of a category of normal from which others are unsounded as departures. A first issue is to determine what a benefit or discomfort would be. By discomfort, of course, I mean to sarcastically understate the roam from daily and accidental inconveniences to very intentional brutality that makes up a common experience of grinding oppression that structurally condemns folks as individuals and groups. Similarly, benefits orthodontic braces a sizeable range in their particularity, but compose an overarching preponderance of niceties. However, who gets to decide what is oppressive or beneficent might be the effected person, individual higher up, or impersonal criteria, but th is is a question for ethics one is tempted to bracket. Some groups, it then seems, are in better places, but who are they? If black women can be defined as a group by first noticing the trends that particular people encounter, such as often creation suspected of shoplifting, and then correlating these patterns with their constructed identity (the combination of categories black and woman) (Collins 25-26), then perhaps groups with structural privilege can be understood similarly. The categories of, say, man and exsanguinous do seem to line up with systematic privileges. In Patricia Hill Collins black feminism, both the criticisms and alternative methodologies offer some insights into the nature of a position of privilege and what it means to inhabit it.

Motherly Love Essays -- essays research papers

Motherly LoveIn the collar stories we read by Flannery OConnor The Comforts of Home, Everything That Rises Must suffer, and The Enduring Chill, the major relationship portrayed was between mothers and their hypersensitive sons. While all of the major characters, the sons, were noniceably similar, the lesser characters of the mothers were also very analogous in many ways. Many of their views, gestures and outward qualities paralleled throughout the stories. After rereading all of the stories again I came to the realization that the mothers OConnor wrote in her stories were variations of the same person.One of the qualities that galvanize out first is that all three mothers are incredibly proud of their sons, even if they have no reason to be. Julians mother loves to communicate people how her son finished college last year. He wants to write but hes selling typewriters until he gets started (10). She does not care that he has not truly written anything, but that he has graduate d college and that he is trying to get his life on track. She is constantly reminding him that Rome wasnt built in a day (11), and she truly call ups this about her son that eventually he will go places with his writing. Mrs. Fox, Asburys mother, while not particularly glad that he is a writer, is proud that he is an artist and has every faith that her son might be writing a long book (90). While not as vocal about how she is proud of her son, she is happy that he is doing what he wants writing. Thomas mother was often found disporting about her son to sensation Drake. In the twos first meeting, Thomas mother tells Star that Thomas writes history Hes the president of the local Historical companionship this year (123). This statement alone proves that she is impressed by what her son does and what he has become in his life, otherwise I doubt his mother would have mentioned it. A lot of the pride these mothers have in their sons may be due to the fact that, except in the case of A sbury, they are wholly children to single mothers. Since they are all portrayed as older women, of course they will have pride in what their sons do, since they have little in their lives to boast about. Yet, it seems to me that these mothers feel their sons can do no wrong in life, which may be a cause of why their sons tend to walk all oer them.&nb... ...l are single and assumed to be widowed. OConnor uses the blue eyes to further connect these background characters who have more in common thence what initially meets the eye.In the three stories by Flannery OConnor that we read for class, the mothers played more important roles then initially thought. They help to shape the story and their sons. individually of them has their own individual qualities, but is very similar to the others. They are all proud of their sons and their achievements, even though these boys feel that they are lacking in one-way or another, are very innocent in all that they do and think, and have many si milar outward qualities. These factors put together lead me to desire that OConnor had the same person in mind when writing each of these stories. Maybe she used different aspects of the same person, but it would be hard for me to believe that more then one person was in mind when writing these stories. The same innocent, heart-driven, blue-eyed mother was depicted in all three stories, expert in slightly different situations. In summary, OConnor had the same person in mind when writing about the mother in all three of these stories.
